AWS Culture of Innovation Event

With remarks from FINTRAC CEO Sarah Paquet.

Public sector organizations—from provincial, territorial and municipal governments, to nonprofits, federal, and defense agencies—often ask us, “How does Amazon innovate?” Amazon’s approach centers on four pillars that help us innovate on behalf of our customers: culture, mechanisms, architecture, and organization.

Through this afternoon session, offered in partnership with the uOttawa PDI’s Centre for the Future of Government, we share aspects of our Amazonian peculiar culture with you, including our Leadership Principles, the Working Backwards process, our development of a microservices architecture, two-pizza teams, and much more. Participants gain a deep appreciation of how these elements interact and influence Amazon’s innovation process.

During the workshop, AWS National Education Lead Coral Kennett will highlight how the Canadian Cloud Innovation Centre (CIC) – a public-private collaboration between the University of British Columbia and Amazon – helped public sector and nonprofit organizations solve challenging business problems with IT solutions. Attendees will also have an opportunity to examine current public sector issues that will be workshopped live by Ms. Kennett.

This session has sparked many participants to discuss their own challenges and goals regarding innovation, and how they can apply similar concepts in support of their own approach to innovation. The goal of this workshop is for attendees to leave with tangible ideas that could be applied in the context of their respective federal departments or agencies.

Additionally, participants will hear from Liam Maxwell, AWS Institute’s Director of Digital Government Transformation, on the “need for speed” in the context of government
digital transformation. Mr. Maxwell served as the UK’s first CTO and first National Technology Advisor.

This free workshop is open to public sector leaders and professionals.
