Selling Ideas Successfully

Larry Page, cofounder of Google, says that “you can have brilliant ideas, but if you can’t sell them, they won’t go anywhere.” Many people struggle to sell their ideas because they have not mastered the art of strategic persuasion, or what Richard Schell from the Wharton School of Business calls “The Art and science of Woo,” or winning others over. When you “Woo,” you use step-by-step sets of strategic movements that bring you and your ideas closer to your audience and their needs.  You don’t need a fancy title to “Woo.” Anyone can do it, and when you do, you will feel empowered, energized and fulfilled.

Andrés J. Drew, BA, BCL, LLB, MSc, is a counsel at the Department of Justice.  He was previously a senior policy adviser at Natural Resources Canada. A bilingual lawyer with more than a decade of experience at the intersection of law, policy, regulation and economics, he has a track record of achieving legislative and regulatory reform by synthesizing and communicating complex issues, negotiating with stakeholders, briefing senior officials and navigating government processes. Andrés is also actively involved in selecting individuals for the Recruitment for Policy Leaders initiative, which seeks out exceptional professionals with diverse achievements and experience for mid- and senior-level roles across the Government of Canada.
