Navigating Complex Security Challenges: The Increasing Demand for a Multi-Party Approach

In recent years, there has been a growing acknowledgement of the need to practice a more coordinated and holistic approach to complex security challenges, especially in fragile states. To this end, governmental and non-governmental agencies around the world have been investigating multi-party approaches, a new form of collective action which calls for including actors and stakeholders beyond governmental agencies and institutions when addressing complex security challenges (e.g. NGOs, PMCs, publics, IOs, etc.). Also known as the comprehensive approach, this perspective recognizes that the bounds of collective action often need to be extended beyond core federal stakeholders. The course will challenge organizational cultures to achieve greater levels of coordination and collaboration, thereby integrating as a whole, with a view to generating lasting solutions to complex security challenges, both today and tomorrow. Lectures, discussions, case studies (international and domestic), a hands-on table top simulation and guest speakers will be used to broaden and deepen the understanding of this approach.

Attendees of this course will learn:
