An Introduction to the Intrinsic Practice

The Intrinsic Practice is a method with tools to enhance one’s ability to experience happiness. Created by Dr. Jacques Bradwejn, Professor Emeritus and Past Dean in the Faculty of Medicine at University of Ottawa, the Intrinsic Practice draws on Professor Bradwejn’s knowledge and experience as a clinician, researcher, medical leader and Dean of Medicine. The practice was developed specifically for anyone who wants to enhance their ability to experience happiness, as an individual, a manager or a leader. It is a multi-modal and integrative method that draws knowledge from the neurosciences, psychiatry, psychology, philosophy and spirituality.

The method consists of 6 steps that build upon one another in a sequence and confer the ability to achieve the following:  

  1. Set-up one’s practice;
  2. Define one’s happiness;
  3. Know one’s self;
  4. Know one’s world;
  5. Envision one’s happiness; and
  6. Opt for one’s happiness.  
     

Each step includes a number of tools consisting of mnemonics with instructions, templates and techniques.

The presentation offers an introduction to the Intrinsic Practice, its method and tools and an orientation to the website that offers it free of charge, on an open access basis for anyone who would wish to use it as mean of enhancing their experience of wellness and happiness.

He has also served as Chair of the Department of Psychiatry of the University of Ottawa, as Psychiatrist-in-Chief at the Royal Ottawa Hospital, and as Head of Psychiatry at The Ottawa Hospital. Dr. Bradwejn has been actively involved in psychiatric and mental health research and on the use of Complementary Medicines in mental health. He is the author of the Intrinsic Practice.
