Introduction to Health Workforce Studies: Planning, Policy & Management

Overview

This course addresses the importance of the health workforce within health systems. It aims to understand the complex adaptive system of factors, sectors, and stakeholders that influence the supply, distribution, mix, and enabling environments of the health workforce. It will also address the key challenges and leading practices in health workforce planning, policy and management including attention to equity, diversity and inclusion considerations.

 

Learning Outcomes

Through the twelve course modules, learners will be able to:

  • Demonstrate knowledge of the importance of the health workforce within health systems
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the complex adaptive system of factors, sectors and stakeholders that influence the supply, distribution, mix, and enabling environments of the Canadian health workforce.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the roles and relationships of various public and private sector organizations engaged in the Canadian health workforce landscape
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the key challenges and leading practices in health workforce planning, policy and management, including equity, diversity and inclusion considerations
  • Evaluate the existing health research literature (academic and stakeholder) for its validity and applicability to health workforce planning, policy and management
  • Design the implementation and management of strategic health workforce change in health care settings that improves population health outcomes, patient experience, reduces costs, and supports care team well-being
  • Exchange accurate and reliable health workforce information with a range of stakeholders
  • Translate knowledge into action through cogent and evidence-informed arguments

 

Audience

  • The anticipated target learners that will benefit from this course are existing workers who are human resource professionals, data analysts and policy officers in the health sector or wishing to move to the health sector and health system organizations, as well as practicing health professionals, supervisors, managers and other health leaders.

Ivy Lynn Bourgeault, PhD, is a Professor at the University of Ottawa who leads the Canadian Health Workforce Network and the Healthy Professional Workers initiative. Dr. Bourgeault has garnered an international reputation for her research on the health workforce.
