Relating and Responding to Mental Health: Employee’s Edition

Overview

In today's society, we are beginning to recognize the importance of talking openly about mental health in an effort to reduce stigma and mitigate the negative effects of isolation and poor mental health on overall wellbeing. The question for many of us then becomes how can we recognize when others might be suffering and how can we talk about mental health in way that promotes connection in a safe and productive way.

This course will provide participants with practical skills they can use to recognize the warning signs that might indicate somebody's mental health is poor or worsening, how to conduct open, safe and productive conversations surrounding difficult topics, how to navigate challenging conversations by setting limits and boundaries as well as the importance of a self-care practice and ideas for prioritizing wellness in one's personal and professional life.

Topics

  • To allow participants a safe space to speak openly about mental health.
  • To help participants to identify basic signs of the most common mental health disorders in others and provide them with the active communication skills needed to respond non-judgmentally and with empathy in order to break down stigma and shame.
  • To empower participants with the skills needed to have challenging conversations and set personal boundaries.
  • To educate participants about the importance of taking care of oneself so offering care to others remains sustainable.
  • To expand the knowledge of community resources available to participants and those with whom they interact.
